Program Description:
The Paramount Theatre has stood on Congress Avenue in the heart of downtown Austin for nearly 100 years. As Austin’s oldest surviving theatre built in 1915, the Paramount has a long history of entertaining Central Texas audiences. The Paramount currently operates alongside the State Theatre next door under The Austin Theatre Alliance. This 501(c)(3) non-profit organization strives to bring the widest variety of entertainment to as many people as possible in its two historic theatres.
The Paramount internship program is open to currently enrolled University students only and offers students the opportunity to develop a working knowledge of the non-profit, performing arts industry. The student will primarily work with the marketing and development departments and will gain great insight into the promotion of various shows at the theatre, as well as the fundraising efforts on which the theatre largely depends. Interns are required to work at least 10 and as many as 30 hours each week (the number of hours you are required to work may be set by your University if you are receiving college credit).
Paramount interns are on a volunteer basis; interns do not receive any financial, housing, or transportation assistance. However, interns will have the opportunity to attend many shows/films for free. The Paramount reserves the right to terminate an internship due to frequent tardiness/absence or poor quality of work/attitude.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Development: assist with tracking of donors, charging of donations, and mailing of subsequent materials and direct mail efforts.
- Marketing: ensure that the in-house marketing efforts are current, submitting Paramount event info to various social websites, aid in the writing of pre-show subscriber notes, distribution of materials to area businesses, merchandise tracking and monthly inventory, help prepare materials for and possibly participate in various events including Arts Run, Gala, subscriber nights, community fairs, and season launch efforts.
- Other administrative duties as needed (filing, data entry, etc.)
Working Environment:
We office at the Paramount Theatre (713 Congress Ave). Our intern station is on the third floor in very close proximity to several other offices and cubicles. The theatre is a historic building and does not have an elevator. Intern(s) must be able to climb stairs easily and carry up to 30 lbs.
Jobs in the non-profit/theatre/entertainment field are in high demand. An internship at the Paramount allows a student to gain some important experience, knowledge, and contacts in the field prior to their graduation. We are looking for candidates with a positive attitude and an all-hands-on-deck approach who is willing to wear many hats and eagerly assist our various departments, efforts, and events. We are a fun and flexible, yet hard-working group of individuals striving to promote this historic theatre and the diverse entertainment that we bring to central Texas.
If you have questions or are interested in applying for a Paramount internship, please email your resume and cover letter to bbarbieri@austintheatre.org. We will contact you if we would like to schedule an interview.
